Go Local Sandbach - June 2025.

By Greg Hall

Assuming you are reading this month's Go Local Sandbach magazine shortly after it was delivered to your doorstep, rather than having stumbled across an old copy while waiting to see a doctor/dentist/barber/hairdresser/podiatrist etc., then you should be aware that it's nearly Father's Day, which is without doubt one of my favourite days of the year.

Ok, it may not have the overall excitement and festive build-up of Christmas Day, the chocolatey-appeal of Easter Sunday, or the faint glimmer of anticipation associated with Valentine's Day, but what it does have - in our household, at least - is that for one glorious day each year it's all about me. Christmas and Easter are predominantly for the kids, Valentine's Day is for the romantics, and Mother's Day is (quite rightly) to celebrate all the excellent mums out there, but now it's finally my turn.

Yes, I know I have to share Father's Day with all the other dads, so it's not actually as unique as, say, my birthday, but since my birthday is in February (and, I therefore stand little chance of spending it in a beer garden in the glorious sunshine), not to mention the fact birthdays are little more than a reminder we are one year closer to our ultimate demise, I'll choose Father's Day every time.

It's essentially an excuse day for dads. Our annual 'get out of jail free' card, if you will. Don't fancy achieving much? Not a problem. Spending the day in comfy clothes lounging around? Go for it. Ignoring all the jobs around the house you've been putting off for months? Absolutely.

Unlike Mother's Day, which is traditionally about the bouquets of flowers, afternoon teas, boxes of chocolates and pampering, we men folk tend to be simple creatures, and I would be more than happy for my Father's Day itinerary to look something like this:

• Lie-in. • Pub lunch • Nap • Watch some sport or a Bond film • Another nap • Takeaway and more beer. • Final, pre-bed nap. • Chocolate with a cup of tea • Bedtime

All joking aside, Father's Day should be a time for celebrating - and remembering - the menfolk of the world, including those dads and grandads who are sadly no longer with us. I don't think anyone would dare to suggest we have it harder than the mums, but that doesn't necessarily mean we find parenting easy, either.

Fortunately, for those of you celebrating Father's Day this year (it's on Sunday 15th June, in case you weren't aware), Sandbach is littered with possibilities. From card and gift shops before the 'big day', then pubs and eateries when it arrives, our beautiful little town has everything you need to make it a special one. Here's to all the dads!
